William F. “Billy” Henaghan, 56, of Bowie, MD, formerly of Frostburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 3, 2019, with the love of his life for 35 years (married for 25 years), Mary Pratt-Henaghan, by his side, after undergoing treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
Born on November 13, 1962, in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of William “Bill” and Christina Carrington Henaghan.
In addition to his wife, Mary, and his parents, he is survived by his brother, Bernard “Bernie” Henaghan of Frostburg; three aunts Joan Bosley, Rebecca “Becky” Carrington, and Maria Connor and husband Brian, all of Frostburg; two sisters-in-laws Beth Ann Clark and husband Robert of Morgantown, WV, and Tamara McAteer of Frostburg; two nephews, a niece, and numerous cousins. He will also be dearly missed by his loyal Sheltie dog, Tallon.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bernard “Bernie” and Marion (Porter) Henaghan and his maternal grandparents, Francis “Jake” and Martha “Marty” (Eby) Carrington.
Billy graduated from Beall High School in 1980, and received his undergraduate degree in Geography and Social Sciences from Frostburg State College, and his MA degree in Geography and Urban Planning from the University of Maryland, College Park.
After 30 years of government service with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Billy began a second career with the Potomac Financial Group, as a Financial Advisor, Raymond James Financial Services. While with the M-NCPPC, Billy held several positions from a Planner to Budget/Legislative Coordinator, Departmental Budget Manager, and most recently as Administrative Services Division Chief. Billy’s strong background in budget, financial management and administration prepared him well for his second career which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Billy and his wife Mary have always been very active University of Maryland Athletic Department supporters, both financially and with their time mentoring students. After 25 years of membership and service to the Terrapin Club, they were recently honored by being inducted into the Terrapin Club Victory Circle, which recognizes the commitment of donors to supporting the student-athletes in their pursuit of excellence.
Billy’s proudest accomplishment was the work he did mentoring young people—encouraging and supporting them in every way possible, and he was available to them 24/7. He could not have been more proud of their many accomplishments, and his legacy lives on through them.
In his leisure time, Billy was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with his many close friends at his “home” clubs—the Country Club at Woodmore, the Cumberland Country Club, and Maplehurst. He was also a fitness enthusiast and enjoyed exercising, running, and biking. In his spare time, he could be found watching or attending any and every basketball game he could find.
