Sandra Kay “Sandy” Chirdon, age 69, of Cumberland, Maryland, died on March 26, 2020. Born in Frostburg, Maryland on March 8, 1951, she was the beloved daughter of the late Myrle W. Layton and Lois E. Myers Layton.
Sandra grew up in the Finzel area and graduated from Beall High School in Frostburg in 1969. She attended University of Maryland – Baltimore Radiology School. She went to work for Sacred Heart Hospital in 1972. She retired from Western Maryland Health System in 2013, with 41 years of service. Growing up, she attended Salem United Church of Christ in Frostburg.
Sandra enjoyed traveling, reading, bowling, and spending time at Big Bear Campground in Hazelton, W V. She was an excellent cook and took great joy in cooking for a crowd. She loved her family.
She is survived by her husband, George William “Bill” Chirdon, who she married in 1978. Also surviving are her brother, Merrill E. Layton and wife, Vickie, of Williamsport, Md., sister Peggy A. Preston and husband, Benjamin, of Cumberland, and nephew Christopher A. Preston and wife, Heather, and their children Jasmine, Samantha, and Marcus. Also surviving are step-daughters Renee Edminston and Noelle Shatzer, and dear friends Justin and Brandi Thornton and children, and her canine companion, Maggie.
Arrangements are being handled by Durst Funeral Home in Frostburg, Maryland.
Sandy was cremated in accordance with her wishes and services will be private.
