Mary B. Roland, 75, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at UPMC Western Maryland.
Born on November 3, 1947, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late A. Joseph Chorpenning and Bernadette (Chapman) Chorpenning. In addition to her parents, her brother Joseph M. Chorpenning preceded her in death. Mary graduated from Allegany High School, Class of 1965, where she was involved in the newspaper and yearbook. She also appeared in the senior class play. She attended Frostburg State College.
Mary worked for a quarter century in the retail food business in Cumberland, Lavale, and Frostburg. The job she enjoyed most was babysitting and caring for her eleven grandchildren as they grew up. She was an excellent cook, loved doing puzzles, was an avid Pittsburgh Penguin fan, and loved vacationing and spending time with her family. Her greatest joy was being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years John Roland, her daughters Katie (Rod) Buskirk, Annie (Gary) Trenum, Jennifer (Buddy) Iser, and Jackie Komatz, all of Frostburg. Also surviving are her eleven grandchildren: Sarah, Reid, Ryan, and Trent Buskirk; Josh and Grace Trenum; Loudan and Brayden Bowman; and Emma, Kacey, and Kenley Komatz; Mary was also a great-grandmother to Arya, Shea, and Preston. In addition, one brother Patrick F. Chorpenning (Nini) of Peoria, AZ, sister-in-law Jeanne Chorpenning of Cumberland, and several nieces and nephews survive her.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Parish in Frostburg on Monday, March 6, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. with Father Eric Gauchat O.F.M. Cap. officiating. Friends will be received at the church an hour before the Mass. Pallbearers will be Mary's six grandsons. Interment will be in St. Michael Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of Egle Nursing and Rehab Center for their kind, loving, and caring treatment of Mary during her stay there, and the Palliative Care Department of UPMC and Linda Krause for all of their help.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or Egle Nursing Home recreational activities fund.
Mary exemplified love, kindness, wit, and unwavering loyalty. She instilled in us the values of family and traditions, and her legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of those who will always love her.
