Lowell Lane Chapman, 82, of Midlothian, passed away at home with family after a brief illness of two months.
Born on August 11, 1941, in Midlothian, he was the son of the late Lester and Bessie Willetts Chapman. He was also preceded by his brother, F. Dale Chapman, and sister, Delores R. Spitznas.
Lowell graduated from Beall High School, class of 1959. He received a Bachelors and Masters degrees in education from Frostburg State. At age 50, Lowell enrolled at West Virginia University and earned a bachelors degree in civil engineering.
He taught mathematics at Flintstone High School for 10 years. During this time Lowell became aware of a shortage of surveyors and engineers in our area. He left the teaching profession and formed his own surveying and engineering company until retiring in October of 2018. He was licensed in Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. During his 50 years of surveying and engineering; he performed hundreds of projects.
Lowell held secretary, treasurer, vice president and president positions for the, Maryland Society of Surveyors, making many trips to Baltimore and other states for conferences. He was awarded the, "Lifetime Achievement Award" in October of 2016.
He was a member of Trinity Assembly of God, Midlothian where he served as trustee and taught Sunday school classes.
Lowell is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sandra (Ark) Chapman. Also surviving are his son, Ryan Chapman and fiance, Amy; granddaughter, Sarah; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will be received at Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Saturday, January 13, 2024 from 1 to 4 pm.
A Funeral service will be held at Trinity Assembly of God, Midlothian, on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at 2 pm, with Pastor Kristen Beeman officating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2 pm.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park, on Monday, January 15, 2024 at 11 am.
