Lois Matese

Lois A. Matese, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at her home.

Born on December 21, 1932, in Frostburg. She was the daughter of the late Carl A. and Agnes Skidmore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, John V. Matese Jr.; her father-in-law and mother-in-law John V. and Lucy Matese; Sister, A. Sue Skidmore; Brother, Carl Skidmore and LeEsta; Sisters-in-law, Theresa Fionta and Virgil, Betty Roik and Leo, and nephews Carl Donald Skidmore and Keith Roik.

Lois graduated from Beall High School in 1950 and Memorial Hospital of Nursing in 1953. Lois was a cheerleader at BHS but mostly cheered for John. She married John V. Matese Jr. on December 27, 1953, at St. Michael's Church in Frostburg. She was employed by Memorial Hospital as an obstetric nurse. After marriage she was able to travel with John (USAF) and worked in Oklahoma State University and Ohio State University Hospitals. She ended her career after 40 years at Memorial Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital and Frostburg Community Hospitals. Lois loved bowling, watching baseball on TV, Bingo, crafts, friends and dancing.

She is survived by her son, Michael Matese and wife Shannon; daughter, Toni Toothaker and husband Keith; grandchildren Tory (Matt) Smith, Trevor (Jamie) Matese, Cody Toothaker, Nick Matese and John Toothaker; great-grandchildren, Grace, Georgia, James, Cici and Mary (Molly); nieces and nephew, Tim, Brenda, Tracie, Terri and Linda.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Devine Mercy Parish, St. Michael's Church, Frostburg, on Saturday April 12, 2025, at 11:00 am with Father Scott serving as Celebrant. Friends and Family will be received at the church one hour prior to the service.

A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Sunset Memorial Park.

The family wishes to express special thanks to Karin and Dave Burner, Cindy Femi, Sherri McKenzie, Amy Kiddy, Greg Spriggs, Royce and Wanda Douty, Sitters: Jodie, Joyce, Linda and Kaylee, UPMC Hospice, and mail lady Jen.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to UPMC Hospice, 12500 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD 21502.
