Joseph William Metz, 85, of Vale Summit, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2024, at UMPC Western Maryland.
Born March 26, 1939, in Westernport, MD to Joseph Metz and Florence (Jones) Metz.
Joseph attended Beall High School where he participated in basketball, baseball and soccer. He graduated in 1957. He married Elizabeth Smith, November 4, 1961, and they had two daughters.
Joseph joined Kelly Springfield Tire company in 1958 as a junior draftsman in tire and mold design. In 1965, he was promoted to senior draftsman and later to section head. He retired in 2000 after 42 years of service as manager of mold design.
He was an avid fly fisherman and traveled to many states as well as local streams; his favorite being Savage River to fish for salmon, steel head, brown and brook trout. He was active in Trout Unlimited and served as chapter president for a number of years. He established classes and taught many anglers in the tristate area the art of fly tying. He was instrumental in bringing trout in the classrooms to a number of Allegany County Elementary Schools. Joseph also enjoyed the game of golf. He was a member of Maplehurst Country Club where he shot a hole-in-one September 10, 2010. More recently he enjoyed golfing with his buddies at Rocky Gap.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Marvin and Wayne, sister, Mary Jo and great grandson, William Cooper.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughters, Pamela Metz and Nancy Cline (Matt); grandchildren, Andrew Farley, Nick D'Atri, Elizabeth Cooper, and Mario D'Atri; great grandchildren, Zander D'Atri, Duncan Cooper, and Dior D'Atri; brother, Michael Metz; sister, Rose Schriver; sister in laws, Mary Louise Wagoner, Brenda Metz, Linda Metz and a number of nieces and nephews.
Joseph was cremated in accordance with his wishes.
