John V. Matese, 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Sterling Care at Frostburg Village.
Born on April 8, 1932, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late John V. and Lucy Matese. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Agnes Skidmore; sisters, Theresa Fiorita and Betty Roik; sister-in-law, A. Sue Skidmore; brother-in-law, Carl Skidmore and LeEsta; and nephews, Carl Donnald Skidmore and Keith Roik.
John graduated from Beall High School in 1950 where he excelled in sports. He held the best all-around athlete award. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1956. He married Lois Skidmore on 12/27/1953 at St. Michael’s Church in Frostburg. After his discharge, he became an electrician with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local 307 and was a member of American Legion Post #24.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lois (Skidmore) Matese; daughter, Toni Toothaker and husband, Keith; son, Michael Matese and wife Shannon; grandchildren, Tory (Matt) Smith, Trevor (Jamie) Matese, Cody Toothaker, Nick Matese, John Toothaker; great-grandchildren, Grace, Georgia, James and Cici; special friends Karin and Dave Burner.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Devine Mercy Parish, St. Michael’s Church, Frostburg, on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at noon, with Father Ed Hendricks serving as Celebrant. Family and friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service.
Private family inurnment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family wishes to express special thanks to Karin and Dave Burner, Cindy Femi, Sherry McKenzie, Gregg Spriggs, Royce and Wanda Douty, UPMC Hospice and Sterling Frostburg Village.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the UPMC Hospice Care program.
