James L. Winfield, 85, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2019.
Born on May 31, 1934, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late William J. and Mabel L. (Yeider) Winfield.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Louise (Layman) Winfield; brothers, W. Kenneth Winfield and Richard C. Winfield
Jim was a member of Divine Mercy Parish St. Michael’s Catholic Church and was a graduate of the Beall High School class of 1953.
He was a proud member of the U.S. Army and was a Korean War Veteran. Following his discharge from the military, Jim was employed at Kelly Springfield Tire Company as a computer programmer. He was previously chief of the Clarysville VFD and was a 49-year veteran of the Frostburg VFD where he had also served as chief. He was a life member of the Arion Band and the 1877 Society. He was a member of Farrady Post 24 Frostburg American Legion and Frostburg Elks #470. He was also a coach in Frostburg Little League baseball.
Surviving are daughters, Denise L. Skidmore and husband Keith, Hagerstown, MD, and Alicia R. Maffley, Frostburg; two sons, Derick J. Winfield and his wife Kate, Frostburg, and Wendell K. Winfield and his wife, Barbara, Bel Air, MD. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Matthew Skidmore, Middletown, VA, Jacob Skidmore, Hagerstown, Lydia and Lena Maffley and Audrey and Isaac Winfield all of Frostburg, and Kevin Winfield, Bel Air, MD; sister, Martha Jenkins, Clarysville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Frostburg Elks #470 will hold their annual Remembrance Service on Sunday, December 1, 2019, at the lodge, 126 E. Main Street at 1 pm.
Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave, Frostburg, MD, on Sunday, December 1, 2019, from 4-7 pm. A memorial service will be held by the Frostburg Fire Department at 6:45 pm.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Divine Mercy Parish St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Monday, December 2, 2019, at 11 am with Father Ed Hendricks serving as celebrant.
Interment will follow in Frostburg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Divine Mercy Parish, 44 E. Main Street, Frostburg, MD, or the Frostburg Fire Department, P.O Box 461, Frostburg, MD 21532.
