James Dale Thorpe Sr, 72, of Greensburg, PA, passed away on Saturday, October, 28, 2023. He was born on June 24, 1951 in Frostburg, MD to the late George Robert and Margaret (Love) Thorpe-Stott. In addition to his parents, he is preceded by his step-father, Homer Stott.
Jim was a member of the Iron Workers Local Union #3. He worked as a Journeyman Iron Worked for 35 years and was employed by A & I Construction, CW Wright and Adams Steel Erection. He always said that he was lucky enough to have a job he loved. Jim travelled from Frostburg to Pittsburgh for the Renaissance in the 1970’s. He left his signature all over the beautiful Pittsburgh skyline. He is mentioned in the book, Workers who built Pittsburgh, and his picture is in the Carnegie Mellon Library.
His love of his life were his four grandchildren and any sport or educational activity they were involved in. He loved to take care of his lawn, hunt, old cars, watching westerns and playing cards. One of his favorite past times was traveling with his family.
Jim will be sadly missed by his wife of 53 years, Barbara (Walker) Thorpe and their three children, James Thorpe Jr., Teresa (Lou) DeVito and Mitchell Thorpe (finance, Joanna Waller); his grandchildren, Isabella DeVito, Trent DeVito, Katarina DeVito and Eli DeVito all of Greensburg, PA; siblings, Bobby (George) Lewis of Sterling, VA, George Robert Junior (Sue Ann) Thorpe; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave, Frostburg, MD, on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from 1 to 3 PM. Services will follow at 3 pm with Father Doug Kenney officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all those who have shown their love and support during this difficult time. Your kindness and presence have provided solace and comfort.
