Hal X. Rhoads, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on April 6, 2025, in East Petersburg, Pennsylvania.
Hal was born on October 31, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, the son of the late Henry and Myrlin (Wheat) Rhoads. Hal grew up in Houston, Texas. A big country boy he was a lineman on the high school football team and briefly attended Texas A&M. His life was changed for the better when he joined the United States Army and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. While there, he met his future wife, Catherine Reagan. Hal loved Catherine dearly. They were happily married for 51 years until her passing in January 2017. Hal worked for State Farm Insurance for 30-plus years. He started his career in Lavale, Maryland, moved to Wilmington, Delaware, and then Dover, Delaware, where they raised their 3 children. When he had the opportunity to return to the Cumberland area, he did so his wife could return to her hometown. Hal retired as a Claims Superintendent in January of 1997. After retirement, Hal and his wife enjoyed traveling. Some of their favorite places included Ireland, Maui, and Greece. Hal also enjoyed fishing with his grandkids, spending time with his dog, Molly, and dancing to any music that had a good beat. He never turned down an ice-cold beer, a big bowl of ice cream, or a juicy hamburger.
Hal will be missed by his 3 children: David Rhoads and wife Melissa (Schertz, Texas) and their daughter Megan and her wife Amanda; Sharon Wolff and husband Michael (Fallston, Maryland) and their 3 children, Justin, Kayla, and Luke; Susan Thompson and husband Mark (Lititz, Pennsylvania) and their 2 sons, Adam and Ryan.
A funeral service will be held at The Shrine of SS Peter and Paul, 127 Fayette St, Cumberland, MD 21502, on Monday, April 14, at 10:00 am with FR. Mark officiating.
Interment will be at Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Mount Savage, Maryland.
Friends and family will be received afterwards at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 300 East Oldtown Rd. Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hal's name to The Janus School, 205 Lefever Road, Mount Joy, PA, 17552.
