George W. Stevens, 84, passed away October 27, 2022 surrounded by his wife and family. Born April 15, 1938, in Zihlman, he was the son of the late Allen and Alice (Hittle) Stevens. George was preceded in death by his brothers, Wayne and Kenny and his sisters, Stella Stevens, Carol Bennett and Simone Dahl.
George was a U.S. veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the Allegany County Utilities Division after 33 years of service. George was also a Master Barber, earning extra money when his children were young. He was known for the flat-top haircut which he proudly gave to his son, grandsons and great-grandsons at one time or another. Many of his clients continued to stop by and set on “the porch” long after he quit cutting hair to reminisce about the days gone by. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed times with his hunting buddies which include a few trips out west. He also loved fishing and crabbing with his many friends – the “Good Ole Days’ he liked to call them. George was a loving family man who enjoyed camping and being outdoors. His favorite camping trips were to Myrtle Beach over 40 some years with his family and the winters in Florida with his wife.
Surviving George are his wife of 63 years, Vivian A. (Wright) Stevens; a son, Wayne W. Stevens and wife Lennie; daughter, Kimberly S. Winner and husband Bobby; three grandchildren who he thought the world of and was very proud of each of them – Nathan W. Stevens and wife Ashley, Brandon W. Stevens and wife Mindi and Amanda L. Filer and husband Jimmy. Pap George was loved by his nine great-grandchildren who were the light of his life – Ella, Emma, Ava, Lilee, Rylee, Braxdon, Brylee, Noah and Evan. Also surviving are a brother, Ronald Stevens and wife Sandy; sister, Hilda Duckworth and husband Richard as well as many nieces and nephews.
George will be cremated according to his wishes. Every day George was grateful for his Lord and Savior for the many blessings the Lord Provided. There will be a memorial service on Monday, October 31, 2022, at 11:00 A.M with his nephew, Pastor David Bennett, officiating at the Trinity Assembly of God, Midlothian, where he attended for over 40 years. The family is grateful for the wonderful and compassionate care George received during his illness. Each and every Home Care and Hospice Care nurse, nursing assistant and aide were truly a blessing.
George leaves behind a legacy of love to his many friends and family. Always willing to help anyone anytime, he would give the shirt off his back to someone in need; this is the husband, father and grandfather George was. He will be missed by all who knew him, especially his “grandpuppies”- Saydee, Gracie, Max, Sammy and Addie.
