Dorothy "Dot" Workman

December 9, 1929 — June 9, 2023

Frostburg

Dorothy (Dot) Workman, 93, of Frostburg, passed away on Friday, June 9th at home in the care of loved ones.

Born December 9, 1929, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of Irene (Wattenschaidt) and Herbert Wilson. She was preceded in death by husband Nathan E. Workman and sister Ruth Gilpin.

Dot graduated with honors from Central High School (1947) and Frostburg State College (1951). She taught third grade at Beall Elementary School. While Dot’s teaching career ended in 1955, she continued to work alongside Nat on the farm and as they became small business owners of Frostburg Enterprises, Inc. The corporation included the Tastee Freeze, Workman’s Car Wash, Amoco Gas Station and Laundromat. Dot willingly took on the role of bookkeeper and general manager for the Tastee Freeze, as well as working a shift or two in the early days.

Dot was a longtime active member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church where the Chapel is named in her honor. Her roles there have been many over the past 70 years.

While her dedication to her church, her family and her savvy as a businesswoman consumed a large percentage of her time, Dot shared her husband's passion for all things farming. As a member of the Allegany County Farm Bureau, she chaired the Ag in the Classroom Project for many years. Dot advocated tirelessly to insure that every public and private elementary school in Allegany County had access to books promoting agriculture and the opportunity to explore the Ag in the Classroom mobile teaching trailers.

Dot is survived by one sister Kathleen Neat and five children: Natalie Tenaglio (Ron), Craig Workman (Susan), Connie Wilson (Dennis), Doug Workman (Susie) and Joy Mills (Tom). “Grandma Dot” leaves behind grandchildren: Nick Tenaglio (Lindsey), Alex Tenaglio,(Esther), Jenna Tenaglio (partner Josh Miller), Amie Armstrong (Corey), Abbey Herman (Jared),Nathan Workman (Ashli), Whitney Barnes (Jesse), Kate Wilson-DeLuca (Mark), Jake Wilson (partner Andrea Miller), Maggie Garlitz (Ryan), Molly Beeman (Robbie), Joel Workman (Giselle), Kelly Workman (fiancé Tyler Thomas), Tanner Mills (Lauren), Connor Mills (Caitlin), Delanie Mills. She will be greatly missed by her 24 great grandchildren with #25 due in August. In addition, Dot is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A very special thank you to her caregivers: Joyce, Karyl, Linda and Michelle. We’ve come to think of you as members of our family. The family would also like to thank Corinne, Jane, Kerri, Theresa and Pastor Seth for your compassionate care over the last seven months.

Friends and family will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave. Frostburg MD on Thursday, July 6, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM and Friday, July 7, from 10:00 to noon, with the funeral service following. All are invited to share lunch at the Frostburg United Methodist Church afterwards. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dot’s memory may be made to the Frostburg United Methodist Church, the Allegany County Farm Bureau AG in the Classroom project (C/O Cindy Robinette, 25400 Robinette Farm Lane, Flintstone, MD. 21530) or the UPMC Hospice Team.
