Anthony “Tony” F. McKenzie of Hollywood, MD died at home on July 5, 2020 at the age of 78 after a long battle with dementia. The son of Fred and Grace McKenzie, he was born October 6, 1942 on a kitchen table in Oakland, Md. He graduated from LaSalle High School in Cumberland in 1961. He moved to St. Mary’s County in 1969 after accepting a position as a carpenter at Patuxent River NAS.
During the majority of his 31-year career on base he finished an eight-hour workday only to return home for dinner and then set out for a second shift building homes, at first for others, then later for himself. He retired in 2000. His work ethic was second to none.
In southern Maryland he raised three daughters, Shelly (Jim), Monica (Steve), and Jennifer (Jesse). In addition, he leaves four grandsons and numerous family members in the Frostburg area. His family would like to extend its gratitude to Phyllis Hawkins, his caregiver, whose careful attention undoubtedly prolonged his life and eased his pain.
Interment will be in Saint Michael’s Cemetery with Deacon Harold Bradley officiating.
